Shawn Beightol

Shawn Beightol was honored with a Preservation Award for his decade-long dedication to researching, preserving, and sharing Miami’s history. He ensures future generations understand the vibrant past of the Miami River and surrounding areas. As an educator at John A. Ferguson Senior High School, he intertwines community advocacy, leading activities like historic narrated canoe trips and hikes along the river and its tributaries. Collaborating with FIU’s Department of Earth and Environment, he conducts research tours, offering students firsthand exploration of the river’s rich history. Through innovative technology and partnerships with organizations like the Miami River Commission and FIU’s Tropical Rivers Lab, he significantly contributes to Miami’s local history preservation.
