On December 29, 2025, the National Park Service officially listed the Pan Am Historic District at Miami International Airport in the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing a remarkable collection of aviation resources documenting Pan American Airways’ pivotal role in international air travel and Miami’s emergence as the “Gateway to the Americas.”
The nomination was submitted by Hangar 5 Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving aviation history in South Florida.
The district includes five historically significant Pan Am properties representing more than five decades of aviation history, from the pioneering era of commercial flight through the Jet Age. Among them are the historic Pan Am Hangar 5, the airline’s former maintenance facilities, the renowned “Taj Mahal” headquarters and stewardess college, and the Pan Am International Flight Academy, which continues operating today.
The designation represents an extraordinary achievement in aviation preservation and recognizes Miami’s enduring connection to the history of global air travel.
