The restoration of the 1920 wood-frame shotgun house at 117 Florida Avenue, located in Coral Gables’ McFarlane Homestead Historic District, stands as a shining example of preservation done right. Amid the sweeping changes taking place in the surrounding West Grove neighborhood, this project honors and uplifts the area’s historic character.
Homeowners Louis and Kim Duncanson, in partnership with architect William Medellin and the City of Coral Gables Preservation Office, led a skilled team that included Jim Sadler of Solo Construction Management LLC, Guillermo Rodriguez of 4 Point Construction, and Alex Afanasyev. Together, they meticulously revived this once-deteriorated home with historically appropriate features such as new exterior wood siding, accurate window reproductions, and a distinctive metal shingle roof.
This remarkable project not only revitalizes a historic home but also reinforces the value of preserving architectural heritage in communities facing rapid development. Dade Heritage Trust congratulates the entire team on their outstanding achievement.
