A century ago, visionary founder George Merrick laid the foundation for Coral Gables, inspired by the City Beautiful movement of the late 19th century. His master plan emphasized grandeur, harmony, and community cohesion, blending Mediterranean Revival architecture with lush landscapes and a thoughtfully connected street network. Merrick’s commitment to elegance, order, and sustainable growth created a city that has become one of America’s most admired and desirable places to live.
Today, as Coral Gables celebrates its 100th anniversary, it remains a living testament to the power of thoughtful urban planning and heritage preservation. The City’s dedication to maintaining its distinctive architectural character, enhancing green spaces, and promoting sustainable design ensures that Merrick’s vision continues to thrive for future generations.
Dade Heritage Trust is proud to honor the City of Coral Gables for its unwavering commitment to preserving the ideals of the City Beautiful while embracing the needs of a modern community.
Accepting the award on behalf of the city was Assistant City Manager Carolina Vester.
