DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Dade Heritage Trust recognizes the outstanding achievements and efforts of those\nwho strive to save our community’s places that matter at our Annual Meeting and Preservation\nAwards Ceremony. \nWe invite you to join us at the fabulous Historic Hampton House at 6 PM on Thursday\, April\n20th\, as we celebrate DHT’s 51 years of preservation in Miami-Dade County\, and the\nindividuals\, businesses and organizations that work diligently to preserve the history of our\ncommunity. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to explore the Hampton House\, which is an original Green Book\nMotel and now a museum and community center in Brownsville.\nThe festivities start at 6 PM with an open bar and great food. DESCRIPTION:In 1962 the City of Miami Beach created the “Garden Center” on a vacant site opposite the Miami Beach Convention Center that was built in 1957. Operated then as a city park\, the Garden was situated on the historic Collins Canal\, an integral part of the beginnings of Miami Beach. In the early 1900s pioneer John Collins dug the canal to transport mangos and avocados (called alligator pears) by boat to the Port of Miami from groves along what is now Pinetree Drive.
