Five years before Miami became a city, Flora McFarlane and a group of Coconut Grove women formed the Housekeepers Club. This organization would later become the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove.
For 135 years, the club has enriched the community through its dedication to public welfare, education, civic improvement, historic preservation, and the arts while fostering fellowship and community connection.
Historically, the club served as a vital social, educational, and cultural center where women, and later men, gathered to build relationships and strengthen the community through service. Flora McFarlane understood the isolation faced by pioneer women and created weekly gatherings designed to provide companionship, learning, and mutual support.
Guided by the motto “Lend a Hand,” the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove continues to embody that pioneering spirit today through stewardship of its historic building and its ongoing community programming and outreach.
