Club Preservation and Stewardship

Cocoplum Women’s Club

Founded in 1912, the Cocoplum Woman’s Club has been a vibrant cornerstone of Coral Gables community life for more than a century. Its 1926 Mediterranean Revival clubhouse, designed by Howard & Early and built by the Knight Construction Company, was initially established for social purposes but quickly embraced literacy, scientific, and philanthropic goals.

Over the decades, the Club has served the community in many roles — from operating the first traveling library, to hosting social gatherings, providing a clinic and preschool, and supporting the Red Cross during both World Wars, earning statewide praise for its service. In recognition of its historic and cultural significance, the City of Coral Gables designated the clubhouse as No. 21 on the Coral Gables Historic Landmark Register in 1978, and in 2005, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the clubhouse continues to welcome the community as a reception hall, premier wedding venue, and host for Club events, as well as corporate and private functions. Its preservation has required ongoing care, maintenance, and renovations in keeping with Coral Gables’ historic standards. In 2024, a major restoration — including a new roof — was completed to safeguard this architectural treasure for future generations.

Dade Heritage Trust proudly honors the Cocoplum Woman’s Club for its enduring stewardship and commitment to preserving one of Coral Gables’ most cherished historic assets. Accepting the award were Kristen Quinn, Betty Quinn, Annie Goodrich-Sorgie, and Sue Nichols.
