Built in 1964, the Miami Marine Stadium is an icon of 20th century Modern architecture, hosting boat races, concerts, Easter Sunrise services and more. It has been shuttered since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Since 2008, Friends of Marine Stadium (website: www.marinestadium.org), a coalition of volunteers under Dade Heritage Trust, has worked to bring the Stadium back to life, securing its historic designation and having it included in the City of Miami’s Master Plan for Virginia Key. Much national publicity has been received, including a video endorsement by Jimmy Buffett and recognition by the National Trust and the World Monuments Fund. Don Worth, a long time preservationist, was a member of the City of Miami Beach’s Design Review Board from 1998-2002 and is Co-Founder of Friends of Marine Stadium.
