This tour focuses on the pioneer era of Northeast Miami, starting with a walk along a stretch of the Military Trail in the Biscayne Heights Subdivision and views of Dr. Potter’s 1874 canal and the 1920s’ mail order bungalows. It continues through the Shorecrest subdivision with views of homes from the pre-Boom, Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and MiMo periods. This tour ends under the 60-year old Poinciana that Mrs. Vivian Laramore Rader, Florida’s Poet Laureate (1931-1975) planted across the street from her home on East Dixie Highway. attend the 16th Annual Commemorative Service, Youth Talent on Parade, in honor of Miami’s most historic cemetery. The celebration procession lines up at 2:30 p.m. in front of the historic St. Agnes’ Episcopal Church, 1750 N.W. 3rd Avenue. Arrive at 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the revered memory of an African American incorporator of the City of Miami, Samuel Jones, and witness the unveiling of his headstone, as well as a tribute to Ruth Sands, a member, who died in 2008. During the ceremony you will be able to enjoy a variety of talents from young people of the community. Miami’s dignitaries will march, ride and walk six blocks with friends and families of this great community to Biscayne Park, N.W. 1st Avenue and 19th Street in a spirited procession led by the Progressive Cornet Band.
